The unique circumstances and constraints of the EDU market means that requirements other than the need for a specific feature set carry much more weight in the decision to purchase than they typically do. For EDU customers, resources are scarce, but data loss risk is higher than normal; staff and administrative equipment is often older, making it more prone to failure, and schools are typically charged with protecting computers used by students, which can have an above-average problem rate.

So what are their requirements?

  1. The obvious- good data protection. Backup and recovery to safeguard against anything from operator error to natural disaster, archiving to migrate and consolidate inactive data for long-term retention, and duplication to clone files in their native format for immediate access from the same or different computer.
  2. The other obvious- a cost effective solution. In today’s economy with ever shrinking school budgets, they need maximum features for minimum dollars. A single cross-platform solution that doesn’t require additional management resources is a must.
  3. They need something that is easy to manage. Not all school systems have dedicated IT staff, so the data protection software should be easy enough to use that it can be handled by a staff member who is not an IT expert.
  4. Scalability. Data is growing exponentially in educational systems just like everywhere else.
  5. Encryption, and password protected encryption is a plus. Schools and universities handle private student information on a daily basis, and they have an obligation to keep it private once it has been backed up.
