Evolution of Technology

Geek Speak

Technology plays a roll in every business.  No matter the size, or profession,  technology is incorporated in business operations today.  In the last two decades, technology has changed the way we do business, from how we shop, do research, communicate and operate our businesses.

From making  processes quicker, more effective and easier to document technology plays a huge role in our lives.  Although technology plays a huge role, it is a relatively new industry which is still developing and changing.  Join us as we chat with Dr. Barb Rembiesa how technology stays the same yet still changes.

Hey, Nation Nation back with Dr. Barb at IAITAM. IT Asset Management Association. Hello there. How are you?

Dr. Barbara Rembiesa  0:16

 Good, good.

Harry Brelsford  0:16

You're coming off of a busy springtime with the your your big conference quickly. That was online this year, you said the enthusiasm level was was high the engagement level?

Dr. Barbara Rembiesa  0:27

Yes, it was. We had the virtual conference. And it was incredible. The just the thirst of knowledge and, and the need to network that was that was there. I think everybody coming out of this pandemic really needs to get together. And really they need to do this networking. We're going to be in Nashville, we're going to do our first live event. This is since COVID. And that's in October. And that's on our website iaitam.org. But everybody has been so excited as ever since we announced Nashville, they are just our phones have not stopped. So we really just a huge event. And like I said that that knowledge share that feeling of I'm not alone, which has always been kind of a thread with our conferences really came through, especially with the pandemic. Yeah, there was so much interaction and just so much exchange of knowledge. It was just incredible.

Harry Brelsford  1:35

Yeah, yeah, a lot of conversations in the tech sector about events and live and the hunger and saw, well, hey, let's get to the topic for this round. And it was doing the talking head song The same as it ever was, I'll hand it over to you.

Dr. Barbara Rembiesa  1:53

Well, we were talking one day, and we kind of came up with the same as it ever was. And of course, that's a talking head song. But you know, technology stays the same, we may give it a different name, we may give it a different brand, or, you know, a shiny new wrapper, but but at the core, it's still the same. And and if we get back to those basics, we can really move forward with our technology. Because, you know, cloud is not a new concept. Yeah, everybody's so worried about learning about the cloud, but it's really not a new concept. It's the same as it ever was.

Harry Brelsford  2:38

time sharing.

Dr. Barbara Rembiesa  2:41

Different brand different name, shiny wrapper, let's make polish it up a little bit and shoot it back out. Yeah, that happens a lot in our industry. And I think it happens because it is so new. I mean, it is so new to businesses. You know, it's only been around 30 years, other other disciplines had decades to mature.

Harry Brelsford  3:08

Don't get me started on the Gutenberg press. I mean, I think we're north of 500 years of the printing press, but go on.

Dr. Barbara Rembiesa  3:14

Yeah. those disciplines had, let's go with centuries to, to mature and get to where they're at today. IT is the baby of business, we did not. So when I say the same as it ever was we're trying to standardize, and we may give it a new name, we may give it a shiny wrapper, but it's really the same as it ever was. And that's that when it started. But technology. Unlike the other disciplines, we are 100% dependent on it. And there is no business out there that can survive without it. Yeah. Yeah. So CEOs need to realize that they are no longer a CEO of a widget company. They're a CEO of a technology company, because technology, they do not have a company. And they need to start managing their business like that. And that's going to be our big push and our big message this year.

Harry Brelsford  4:25

Okay, sounds cool. And it's it. We've talked about this before in the Hello World podcast we did with you, but I want to reiterate that this is also a place that SMB MSPs can play too often. I think we think of this as an enterprise play and your organization that you know, you were you came to SMB Nation several times back in the day and carried the flag and so folks, you know, it's just another opportunity I would offer to become more of a overused term trust business. advisor but you know, get get elevated over geek mode. Final Thoughts?

Dr. Barbara Rembiesa  5:07

Yeah, just just understanding that technology is your business. And that's so important and they may put a new name or new rapper or shiny polish on it, but it is the same as it ever was. And if you get four principles, then you can move forward with your business.

Harry Brelsford  5:26

Love it. All right, we'll see you next quarter. Thanks. Sounds good. Thank you. Bye bye.
