I’m reading “Far From Home” that my Alaskan childhood/lifelong friend “Coolie” (aka Charles Wohlforth) co-authored with Senator Lisa Murkowski. As the really old Life cereal TV ad said “...he likes it (yay kids won’t get thatl).
I’m starting Chapter 5. Here are some highlights from the last few chapters for your consideration.
- Lisa was the swing dog to Senator Steven’s lead dog persona in the Senate representing Alaska.
- Lisa learned that fake friends will snuggle up to you before the “ask.” I’ve seen this in my tech career as well.
- Chapter 2 had a great play-by-play of Senator Ted’s corruption trail for renovations to his Girdweed (opps Girdwood) ski condo by corrupt Bill Allen who directed oil field services vendor VECO.
- Chapter 3 brought out the human side of Lisa - I’ve met Lisa but don’t know here and she has many of the same busy stuff many of us do raising a family, cooking, etc. These nuances keep it REAL when reading this book.
- I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes insights into the total non-sense of elected officials off camera.
- Couldn’t put Chapter 4 to rest until I completed it with the detailed account of the write-in campaign of 2010. One challenge that stood out was getting Alaskans to proper spell her name. There was a funny story about a T-shirt with a cow and skis. Mur-cow-ski lol. The write-in bracelets with Lisa’s full name spelled out were brilliant.

So onward one cup of coffee and one page at a time. Stay tuned for more updates.
