At the recent Px8 Beyond 2025 event, I found a few moments to meet with Carolyn April, Vice President, Research and Market Intelligence at GTIA (formerly CompTIA). She gave me the following advanced insights into her latest research on SMB Tech Buying Tech Trends. Her work is ongoing and her final research will be released at the GTIA ChannelCon event in Nashville in late July (join me!)
Let’s get started with SMB fun facts and then the top five takeaways.
- 99% of US businesses have fewer than 250 employees.
- 45% of the total US workforce is employed by SMB companies.
- 2/3 of SMBs will spend between 25K and $1M on tech this year, and on average spend a greater percentage of annual revenue on tech-related needs than large/enterprise firms.
And now the good stuff. I kinda felt Carolyn was teasing me a tad as her full report is forthcoming at ChannelCon (LOL).
- SMB’s top business priorities focus evenly on growth and efficiency.
- Technology plays a prominent role in achieving SMB business priorities and the budgets that reflect that.
- Nearly 2/3rds of SMBs identify AI as the most impactful tech over the next two years.
- Cybersecurity has SMBs’ attention, but their approach is not as aggressive as it should be
- SMBs of all sizes take a diverse approach to tech procurement, outsourcing, and use of MSPs.
