Last week in my state of Washington, the Washington Roundtable and the Boston Consulting Group released a chilling report showing the job skills crises that exists in the state. They found:

  • There are 25,000 unfilled jobs in Washington as a result of the skills gap, 80% of which are high skill STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
  • If nothing is done, the number of unfilled jobs will increase to 50,000 by 2017.
  • Filling this skills gap by 2017 could result in 160,000 new jobs in WA.

The report concludes that eliminating the job skills gap will require increasing computer science and engineering interest among K-12 students and capacity at colleges and universities. It also concludes that improving in-bound migration of both domestic and foreign skilled workers would help significantly.
