This morning, Seattle-based F5 Networks, Inc. announced that they have agreed to acquire Colorado-based LineRate Systems. This acquisition brings LineRate’s expertise with software defined networking (SDN) services into F5’s existing application-layer services portfolio.
LineRate Systems has developed a programmable, proxy-based layer 7+ networking service technology. Though it is currently in the early stages, LineRate Systems and F5 Networks engineers will further develop this technology to be a main facet of F5’s software defined data center initiatives. F5 reported that application-layer solutions are becoming integral for customers wishing to keep a competitive advantage. This is due to the technology’s ability to provide scalable, flexible and high-performance application layer services.
“In order to reap the benefits of software defined data centers, programmable, scalable network services must be present throughout the entire network stack—up to the application layer,” explained Manish Vachharajani, Co-Founder and Chief Software Architect at LineRate Systems, in a press release today. “We recognize that the SDN fabric may be good at layer 2-4, but ultimately customers care most about the applications. The LineRate team is excited to join F5 and looks forward to helping F5 accelerate development initiatives in this important market.”
