Dell co-designs solution with Cloudera and Syncsort

Dell announced today it worked with Cloudera and Syncsort to co-design a new solution for Hadoop created to streamline the extract, transform and load process for data analysis. dell

The solution’s features work to combat the lack of flexibility and the high cost of traditional tools such as RDBMS and EDW with increased customizability and improved access to insights.

“Businesses are increasingly requiring quicker, cost effective and richer data insights to drive and accelerate their business results,” said Jim Ganthier, VP and GM of Engineered Solutions and Cloud, Dell. “Dell and Cloudera continue to jointly bring to market breakthrough big data and analytics solutions that deliver on those needs. Our new solution, which now incorporates Syncsort, will bring the power of big data insights to a whole new set of users who were once unable to justify the costs and complications of previously available commercial solutions.”

The solution is generally available today.

Dell releases SonicWALL series designed for SMBs and enterprises

Dell releases SonicWALL series designed for SMBs

Wireless networks are necessary for almost all businesses both at the small business and enterprise level, yet securing networks that include myriad systems and users can be costly and dangerous to data if not properly selected or maintained.

Dell announced today availability of its SonicWALL TZ Wireless Firewall Series, wireless network security solutions designed to deliver 802.11ac wireless performance and security for at a low cost.

"Attacks against all networks – including wireless networks – are becoming more sophisticated, and require a solution that ensures the highest level of security without compromising performance or bandwidth. We observed a 100 percent increase in the use of HTTPS traffic to obfuscate content,” said Patrick Sweeney, Dell Security executive director. “Whether that is wired or wireless traffic, it’s a problem for security. Dell SonicWALL TZ wireless firewalls support the latest high-speed 802.11ac wireless standard, as well as the ability to inspect encrypted traffic, helping to ensure ultra-secure connectivity. Our TZ wireless firewalls also provide a multi-layered approach to security that leverages our industry-leading deep packet inspection, application intelligence, control and visualization, as well as central management technology to provide an easy-to-deploy, high performing solution for both SMBs and large, distributed enterprises."

The TZ wireless firewalls can be combined with other solutions to scale to different environments.

The content and the special exhibits we’ve assembled with our partners has grown, creating a value proposition that is difficult to find in a similar one-day forum, especially without any kind of registration fee,” said Mary Campbell, vice president of marketing at D&H Distributing. “We regard this as an investment in our customers’ development, and as we face issues like the impending server end-of-service date, our trade shows continue to offer crucial tools and opportunities.”

D&H said it expects close to 1,000 resellers to attend the show, with 100 manufacturer partners providing exhibits at the event.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., seminars start at 12 p.m., the exhibit floor opens at 3 p.m., and the show closes at 8:30 p.m. Registration online is available here.

Microsoft WPC: #WIN8.1

Windows 8 1 PreviewWhy? Why didn’t Microsoft do this the first time? It was as simple as a Start button!

This past weekend, I geeked out in my man cave (maybe I should call it a man cove as I live on an island) and installed the new Windows 8.1 Preview. I completely document the Windows 8.1 Preview deployment experience here in a 10-minute video. You will witness the “real world” as I seek to go where no Harrybbb has gone before: using Windows 8.1. I encountered a few challenges along the way, including the inability to redirect the installation to Drive D, and how the installation must be completed on a monitor in landscape, not portrait mode.

Oops…My Bad! 5 Blogs We Missed Last Week

Here we go again! As I do each week, I am really enjoying bringing our readers a quick round-up of the blog coverage I didn’t manage to get to during the week prior. This week’s installment comes to you a day late(r) than usual, and that is due to the Memorial Day holiday, which was celebrated yesterday in the U.S.

SMB Nation’s offices were closed in honor of this holiday, which salutes our veterans. I am always grateful for our Armed Forces, especially since it runs in my family—both my grandfather and my father served honorably in the U.S. Army—grandpa served during WWII, and dad was in Special Forces during the Vietnam War.

Intel Says it will Exit PC Biz…who is Next??

This morning, while doing my usual online news scouring to see what is going on in our industry (and of course what my competitors are up to), I came across a few online posts discussing how Intel is set to leave the traditional desktop PC business. While this is not “new news” with HP last year saying they would do the same (and then backpedaled that it wouldn’t), and also with many speculating that Dell is planning the same path, I felt it was important to bring forth this trend and what it could possibly mean for our industry.
