Top 5 Reasons to Attend SMB VoIP
September 20-22, Washington DC 2010

5. The humidity will be gone from Washington DC. Admittedly – the recent Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Washington DC (mid-July) was a bit overheated and humid. That all changes in the fall – it’ll be a glorious few days at the Gaylord!

4. Co-location is LEVERAGE! We are delighted to team with Channel Partners, a well-established telecom show. We believe that we’re better together. The typically Channel Partner’s attendee is a “sales agent” who is very good at promoting and selling telecom plans and cloud services. That allows our SMB Nation tribal members to actually “do the work” if you team up. It’s hand-and-glove folks!

3. SMB Subject Matter Experts! We’re bringing in the best in the business again. You’ll just have to click through to see who!

2. Be there at the Start – SMB VoIP community. Leading the parade and being ahead of the curve is a time-tested formula for business success. This is your chance to “own” the entire customer relationship that combines voice+data. This time the convergence is for real.

1. You Must! Home alarm system time folks – if you don’t VoIP your customers as a computer guy, someone else will. That is, the telephone grrl will come in and steal your client. Trust us – she’s already calling on your accounts!

No sooner than I completed a lengthy call with HP today than it’s CEO Mark Hurd resigned. I hope my comments on future HP SMB server products were in no way responsible for his undoing.

In reality – the story is still developing and I am currently watching CNBC for more details. All facts point towards some bad behavior being his undoing. Apparently Hurd has been caught up in a sex scandal and there is a sexual harassment law suit in play. And there were questions about expenses.

Early reports center on a perma-temp HP contractor and Hurd.

Folks - I'll get more details later but this was just shared with me by MSFT. SMS&P VP Birger Steen has just resigned to join Seattle-based hot shot ISV Parallels as its new PRESIDENT!

You may recall we interviewed Birger recently on the Microsoft SMB Economic Study.

Here is what Microsoft just isued and I'll get some comments from Parallels tomorrow.

(full disclosure - both ISVs are part of the SMB Nation)  Parallels is known for its Macintosh virtualization products and its software/cloud distribution framework.

Our small and mid-market business (SMB) leadership group, and specifically Birger Steen, has played an instrumental role in bridging the gap between the SMBs and technology through their leadership in the past year.  Microsoft remains committed to investing in small and mid-market businesses and our partners who serve them.   The list of products and offerings that we launched last year specifically for the SMBs is a great testament to the priority and focus we have with this customer segment.  I am even more excited with the opportunities that cloud computing can bring to SMBs now and in the near future.  We appreciate all that Birger has done and wish him well.”

Our friend of the family and SMB PC cover model, Grace Schroeder, has done it again. You may recall that Grace wrote the “Clown Services” article HERE.

Well this past week she wrote “Analyzing cloud computing’s past and future” for SearchCloudcomputing.com HERE. She's got the wrtier's itch!

Give her a fair shake, read it and give her feedback. She’s a tough New Yorker! She’s also the CEO of Idea2.com, a SMB CRM ISV.You will also have a chance to hear her pon a cloud panel at SMB Nation Fall 2010 i Las Vegas.

PS- You can also hear Gracve's interview on a recent ComputerOutlook radio show (hosted by John Iasiuolo where I am an invited co-host). Listen to the June 24th show HERE. You can also meet Grace at the CompTIA Breakaway event next week in TX.

Welcome to the fast, wild and gonza world of mergers and acquisitions. Sure – you might have images of drug crazed day traders moving in and out of deals at light speed but that is a flawed visual Polaroid.  The reality is that M&A activity is always occurring, often slowly in stealth mode. Tonight selected guests, invited by All Covered, will have a chance to witness this business process first hand at a toni Denver restaurant.

We’ve

received and reviewed several confidential documents and taped voicemail messages

from Denver-area SMB Nation tribal members who have commented that All Covered is putting on a full court press to roll-up SBSers and the like into its nationwide service organization. For the lifestyle consultant seeking an exit, this might be it. For the ambitious go-and-grow channel partner, I’d recommend you proceed with caution. Think of the old international diplomatic axiom of “Trust but Verify” strategy

Yes – it’s true. Next week we are throwing a Texas-sized BeerFest at CompTIA’s breakaway in San Antonio, TX. But did you know that we’re throwing an Alaskan-sized picnic at my house on Bainbridge Island next Friday as well?

It’s my annual summer picnic to host the West Sound Technology Association (WSTA) and the Puget Sound Small Business Server User Group. Mellow attitudes and sandals required at this end-of-week, end-of-day gathering. Think Boulder, Berkeley, Bainbridge Island and you get the idea – it’s a geek lovefest on a slow summer day. It’s not a political fund raiser but we’ve had local politicians crash this party unannounced before seeking support (you know the type – the names you see on the roadside signs). We typically run about 60+ attendees who are well-cared for by the SMB Nation staff. There’s beer and wine but nothing illegal going on here. We have all agreed and made a pact that there will no longer be nude hot tubbing (PLEASE!) so bring your swim suit if you want lounge in the bubbly hot suds.

Folks from Microsoft, Cisco, Qwest will also be intermingling in the crowd but they come in peace! The only mystery is whether the VarGuy will join us here on South Beach?

More details on the picnic are HERE. If the sandals fits – wear 'em!

First the whispers started at WPC in Washington DC in mid-July. Intermedia, arguably the largest Hosted Exchange provider in like, the world, was gonna make a voice play. It’s a story that is much bigger than the standard press release below.

First – you can watch my video with Intermedia SVP Robert “Bob” Leibholz on this very matter!

Second – I want to both applaud and acknowledge Intermedia’s wisdom to marry voice+data. It’s starting to happen fast forward where the data providers are no offering voice. And as you can track in my prior blogs on Qwest and other telcos, vice-versa (Telcos are offering e-mail). Someday we’ll all be one in the same IMHO.
The Intermedia acknowledgement part concerns confronting evil where it lurks. SMB Nation tribal members are accurately aware of the convergence of voice+data and the new players in the sandbox including Telcos. Intermedia has offered up a partner program to engage the SMB Nation tribal member, not necessarily compete again “us.” So I suggest you give’em a fair shake and learn more.
