Top 5 Reasons to Attend SMB VoIP
September 20-22, Washington DC 2010

5. The humidity will be gone from Washington DC. Admittedly – the recent Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Washington DC (mid-July) was a bit overheated and humid. That all changes in the fall – it’ll be a glorious few days at the Gaylord!

4. Co-location is LEVERAGE! We are delighted to team with Channel Partners, a well-established telecom show. We believe that we’re better together. The typically Channel Partner’s attendee is a “sales agent” who is very good at promoting and selling telecom plans and cloud services. That allows our SMB Nation tribal members to actually “do the work” if you team up. It’s hand-and-glove folks!

3. SMB Subject Matter Experts! We’re bringing in the best in the business again. You’ll just have to click through to see who!

2. Be there at the Start – SMB VoIP community. Leading the parade and being ahead of the curve is a time-tested formula for business success. This is your chance to “own” the entire customer relationship that combines voice+data. This time the convergence is for real.

1. You Must! Home alarm system time folks – if you don’t VoIP your customers as a computer guy, someone else will. That is, the telephone grrl will come in and steal your client. Trust us – she’s already calling on your accounts!

I sleep better at night knowing that my clients networks are safe and secure. With the introduction of so many new backup technologies I started my search for
a backup solution, which would combine backup with disaster recovery to bullet proof backup my clients networks .   My search ended when  I met Nicole Dirsksen and Rameill Yaghoub from Axcient at SMB Nation East last spring.   They gave a very convincing demo but the proof is in the pudding so I  signed up as a reseller and got my hands on a demo unit for Cloud9-IT’s tech center.   I always

Recently after attending the CompTIA event in Texas, I stopped by the AMD site in Austin Texas to learn “what’s up?” To be honest, AMD hadn’t been top of mind in my mind during the recession so I was interested to learn more and get current. I’m glad that I did.

Photo caption: I visited these SMB marketing managers in Austin a couple of weeks ago. The "funny" is that the sign in the background sez "no photos allowed"

The AMD in SMB update can be framed two ways: partners and products.

Partners

To learn more about the partner program, I spoke with Jason Mitchell, Director of Commercial Marketing at AMD.  He acknowledged that there had been many changes in the past 18-months at AMD, in particular in the partner program.

My friend and colleague Eric Ligman yesterday posted the best Facebook entry of the day. Simply stated – where were you 15 years ago today when Windows 95 launched?

I submit for your approval – I was ahead of my time (and hopefully you too).

First – the facts. I was interviewed on a prime time evening news segment on KIRO News (Channel 7, CBS, Seattle) at my office about the Windows 95 launch and the opportunity. This was after several months of working with Windows 95 in its beta test phase in a program called “TechEval”

Photo caption: I'm wearing my Win95 TechEval shirt today. I have saved it for 15-years!

CLOUD STORAGE PROVIDER SYMFORM ANNOUNCES ZERO COST PROMOTION FOR STORAGECRAFT RESELLERS
MSPs can finally protect their client’s data effectively and affordably.

Symform, Inc. (www.symform.com), developer of the Symform Cooperative Storage CloudTM, today announced the “StorageCraft + Symform Zero Cost Online Storage” Promotion. The promotion will enable StorageCraft resellers to move their clients’ data to the Symform Cooperative Storage CloudTM at no additional cost for six months “We understand that due to this tough economy it’s very difficult for Managed Service Providers to offer new solutions to clients - even if it’s a necessary solution to protect their precious data,” said Kevin Brown, VP, Sales and Marketing of Symform.

I was just about to write a blog called “SMB Scumbags” that would dovetail CRN’s excellent “VARs Behaving Badly”  article published yesterday (which I recommend you read). CRN’s article brought back a flood of business experiences and I was about to let the fly on the wall talk. Sure – I could have told you about conference robbers who took down my good friend in a Dallas gun fight or Fortune One list grabbers who teamed with a well-known ratio guru under the corporate political  air cover of performing “operational ratio research” (kinda like American forces being “advisors” in the new post-withdrawal Iraq [wink-wink]). Following CRN’s lead, I was prepared to name names and lawyer up for the backlash one could expect from these anticipatory breachers. Everyone in business has these stories and learning experiences that make us all wiser and ultimately better.

Instead  I exercised restraint of pen and tongue. Why? Because as I was typing, I received a direct mention Tweet from @karlpalachuk that, quite frankly, dramatically improved my attitude,

While picking up lots of pencils for the kiddos school back pack, go ahead and add a Pocket MBA for yourself. As a SMB channel partner, you know that game. Continuous education is a must do and it’s soon to be fall in the northern hemisphere. For those in the southern hemisphere, you can always go to summer school to earn your Pocket MBA.

Learn more about the Pocket MBA certificate program HERE!

The more meetings I’m in where I make mention of the Pocket MBA, the more favorable feedback I receive. Last week I had a one-hour meeting with Microsoft executive Cindy Bates discussing her new role (blog to follow soon folks) and we have a few extra minutes to discuss the SMB Nation Pocket MBA. She devoted her undivided attention to my story for over five minutes (we’re talking executive time her folks) and completely understood and support what we’re trying to do here.

So what is the “here” here?
